DTF Heat Transfers & Gang Sheets FAQ
What is Direct-to-Film (DTF)?
Direct-to-Film (DTF) transfers have become an increasingly popular method in the custom apparel industry, offering flexibility and precision that other techniques often lack. In simple terms, DTF transfers are created by printing designs directly onto a special film, which is then transferred onto fabric using a heat press. This method allows for high-quality prints on a wide variety of materials, making it a versatile option for both small and large-scale projects.
DTF transfers are unique in their ability to work with a wide range of fabrics, from cotton to polyester and even blends. Unlike screen printing or vinyl, DTF doesn’t require the same level of preparation or complex machinery, making it more accessible for smaller businesses or individuals looking to create custom designs quickly. Additionally, DTF transfers are known for their durability and vibrant color, even after repeated washing.
Here's a more detailed explanation:
Process:
DTF printing involves printing a design onto a special film using specialized DTF inks and then applying a hot melt powder adhesive to the printed side. The film is then heat-pressed onto the fabric, transferring the design.
Versatility:
DTF printing can be used on a variety of fabrics, including cotton, polyester, and blends, making it suitable for different types of apparel.
Durability:
DTF transfers are known for their wash resistance and ability to withstand cracking and peeling, resulting in long-lasting prints.
Cost-effectiveness:
DTF printing can be a cost-effective option, particularly for on-demand printing and small businesses.
Color vibrancy:
DTF excels at printing white ink, which allows for vibrant prints on dark fabrics.
Which fabrics are compatible with DTF printing?
DTF prints adhere to cotton, polyester, blends, and more, including hoodies, jerseys, hats, and tote bags.
Heat Press - Pressing Instructions
Must have your heat press set for FIRM pressure with th recommended 70-90 psi of preassure.
Heat Press to 280° (check your press with a heat gun or heat prees tempature strip, to check if your press runs hot or cold - pressing DTF transfers too hot WILL ruin the adhesive and your transfers will not stick)
Recommend 3 total presses
1st press - (Pre-Press) 5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles from the garment.
2nd press - Lay transfer on fabric and press 10-15 seconds (no cover sheet needed)
Let the transfer cool for a few seconds, then Peel Film - test a corner gently to ensure the film will peel easily.
3rd press - Cover with a Cotton piece of fabric (or a extra cotton tee) for a matte finish or Teflon sheet for a shiny finish. Other options include Parchment paper, Specialized Finishing sheets, for another 10-15 seconds.
Everyone's heat press pressure is slightly different, test to find out what works best for you. Remember that you cannot over-press your transfers. The better they are pressed, the more durability they have through washing and drying.
Cricut EasyPress - Pressing instructions
1. Position Your Design
Pre Press your garment for 5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles from the garment. Position the transfer in the desired location.
2. Press
Set your Cricut to Medium 300°F-355°F degrees and 20 seconds. If that is not hot enough where the transfer is adhering to your shirt, increase it by 15 degrees at a time and try again. You can't overpress your design, so try until you figure out the right settings.
Before pressing, place teflon sheet or cotton piece of fabric over the transfer, pressing down with hard pressure for 20 seconds. Remember that you cannot overpress your transfers. The better they are pressed, the more durability they have through washing and drying.
3. Peel
After a Few Seconds
Wait a few seconds (or more until slightly cool) and peel! If parts of the design are not sticking, lay it back down and press again with added pressure and heat (+15°F). If unsuccessful, increase heat by 15°F increments until it works. Remember, the great thing about DTF Transfers is that repeated pressing won't damage the transfer.
4. Final Press
Place a piece of parchment paper or a cotton fabric material over the design and press again with the same settings for 20 seconds to soften the design, increase durability, and remove shine. If you want a shinier finish instead, you can use a Teflon Sheet for this result.

Household Irons - Pressing Instructions
1. Position Your Design
Pre-Press (iron)your garment for 5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles from the garment. Position the transfer in the desired location.
2. Press
Set your iron to a temperature that matches the fabric you’re using. If the transfer isn’t adhering properly, gradually increase the heat toward the cotton/linen setting -- the hottest option - while ensuring it won’t damage your garment. Before pressing, place a Teflon sheet or cotton piece of fabric over the transfer and apply firm pressure for 20 seconds.
3. Peel After a Few Seconds
